Swap.gg is a virtual item trading platform for virtual items backed by Valve Corporation’s Steam platform. Valve Corporation’s Steam platform is a hub for gamers to allow them to play online games such as Counter-Strike: Global-Offensive, Rust, Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2.

The Steam platform is a complex ecosystem and includes features such as game specific workshop pages, a broadcasting service, curations and most importantly a Steam Community Market.

Within certain games, players are able to unbox, buy or get dropped virtual items. While in principle these items represent no real-world value, Steam users are able to buy, sell and trade these items through the Steam Community Market and between Steam accounts.

Because these items don’t retain intrinsic value, Steam users may seek ways to sell or trade these items for real-world goods or money outside of the Steam platform, where they are sold for prices based on a supply/demand principle.
